Room 320, Friday Afternoon
After the Student Council meeting, Sam went to the post office to check his mail. When he came across an especially large envelope among everything else he'd been handed, he went straight back to his room and grabbed his phone. Whatever was in here, he didn't want to open it alone.

[For the callee!]

Dean was at the library going through old newspapers on microfiche when his phone rang. He quickly answered it, ignoring the dirty look he got from the librarian. "'lo?"

"Hey Dean, how's it going?" Sam asked, trying to gauge an answer from his voice. "Is this an okay time?"

"Yeah, hold on." Dean got up and headed outside where he could talk without the glares of doom. "Just doing some research at the library. What's up?"

"Uh, nothing," Sam said, setting the envelope on his lap. "I just wanted to see how you're doing. Are you working on a case?"

"Maybe. We're still in the feeling it out stages. You know how it goes."

"Yeah, I know. I don't suppose there's anything I can do to help from here?" Sam asked.

"Nah, I've got it under control." Dean leaned back against the wall as he continued. "So what is it that you're trying to avoid by offering to be my geekboy researcher?"

"Nothing," Sam said, but it was too quick and he knew Dean would see - or hear - right through it. "I got a letter from one of the colleges I applied to."

"Thin or thick?" Dean asked.

"Uh, kind of thick? Bigger than just a piece of paper," Sam said. "But it could still be a really detailed rejection. It's from Columbia and they don't take a very large percentage of who applies, and it's my top choice so I really want to get in but what if I didn't?"

"Sammy," Dean said, laughter in his voice. "Breathe. Of course you're going to get in. They'd be crazy not to take you."

"You don't know that," Sam said, picking the envelope up again. "Okay, I'm going to open it. Promise me you won't think any less of me if I didn't get in?"

Dean rolled his eyes. "Yeah, because I've so obviously based my love of you on whether you're going to get into some fancy school somewhere. Don't be stupid, Sammy."

Stupid was exactly what Sam was afraid this mail would say he was, but he finally bit the bullet and tore the envelope open, pulling everything out and stopping only when he looked down at the letter and saw the word Congratulations.

"Oh my God. Dean! I got in!" he said, like Dean might be as shocked as he was somehow.

"Well, duh," Dean said.

"Dude, I didn't want to get all hopeful and have things not pan out," Sam said, flipping through the papers to see what they'd sent him. There were catalogs and meal plan guides, and right after the first letter was a second one, marked Scholarship Information.

"Oh my God," he said again, reading everything over.

"What?" Dean asked.

"They're giving me a scholarship," Sam said. "For 'academic excellence.' For, like, everything." He'd been pretty sure that he'd get into at least one of the schools he'd applied to, but he'd also expected to be setting himself up for decades of student loan bills. To be offered a full ride was completely outside of anything he'd imagined, but there it was.

For Dean that didn't really come as a surprise. He knew his brother was a brainiac. "So this place knows quality when it sees it. Guess it might deserve to have you as a student."

Sam laughed, shuffling through the papers again. "I can't believe it. It's really happening," he said. "And Dad and Zoe don't have to worry about anything. I--I'm going to have to tell Dad, aren't I?" he finished, some of his excitement fading at the thought of bringing this subject up with his dad.

"You told me, didn't you?" Dean said. "Years ago. And frankly I think I'd be the harder sell than Dad. Especially now, with the way everything's changed since back then."

Sam frowned and sighed. "I don't know, Dad still worries a lot. I think he'd rather have me here in town, or hunting with you, not a whole other dimension away at college. I mean, I can call him every day if that's what it takes, but what if it's still not enough? What if he doesn't want me to leave?"

"He let me leave," Dean pointed out.

"But you're hunting. You're doing what he wants. And you're not as far away sometimes," Sam said. "And you're not the one with demons and God only knows what else after you."

"Funny, I thought my name was Winchester too. Seems to translate into 'demon attractor' that. Not just you, Sammy."
